Former governorship candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), in the 2023 governorship election in Nasarawa state, Umar Aliyu Akwe-Doma has denounced his membership of Zenith Labour party and joined the ruling APC in Nasarawa stste.
Umar Aliyu Akwe Doma, the first son of the former late governor of the state, Aliyu Akwe Doma had contested the governorship election 2019, 2023.
Declaring for the ruling APC in Doma local government Area when he defected along thousands of ZLP supporters to the All Progressive Congress (APC) on Sunday.
He stated that the transformational strides of the president Ahmed Bola Tinubu led All Progressive Congress (APC) at the national and that of governor Abdullahi Sule in Nasarawa state informed their decision to dump the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) to All Progressive Congress (APC).
The former ZLP governorahip candidate said that it was better for him and his supporters to join a platform that was already addressing the yearnings of the citizens of the state and the country at large.
“The principal issue behind this gathering in Doma local government area of Nasarawa state of ‘Nsarawamu, Amanamu political movement that formed the nucleus of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), is to intimate party officials and faithfuls of my thinking as leader of the party on our future political journey
“We have been in Zenith Labour Party from 2018. We’ve participated in national and state elections. We have contributed our quota in deepening democracy in Nasarawa state and Nigeria as a whole.
“However, the primary purpose of a political party is to contest election, to have representatives who would form government or who would be in the legislature to promote ideals and philosophy and also facilitate the development of our communities and also fulfill our aspirations.”
“I have reviewed our circumstance in Zenith Labour Party. I have come to the conclusion that we’re better placed in a different political party.
“We together with certain colleagues who are both politically active and not politically active have assessed our circumstance locally in our various communities, in our local governments, state and within the context of our country Nigeria and we’ve come to the inevitable conclusion that I’m better pleased to lead this followership that I have by the grace of God into a better and more formidable platform
“Having reviewed the political scenario in Nigeria, don’t imagine, still imagine, ahead of the 2027 elections and all other elections, I believe that it is practically impossible for any opposition to snatch power from the APC government of President Ahmed Bola Tinibu.
” I have also taken a look at the transformational regime of Engineer Abdullahi sule and his colleagues in Nasarawa State and align with his leadership position and the ongoing efforts at facilitating rapid socio-economic development in our state.”
“As a consequence, I met with officials of the party, Zenit Labour Party here three days ago and we all came to the conclusion that we should have a change of direction politically if only to attain those lofty dreams and aspirations that we have.
“Today’s gathering is an amalgamation of our state executive council members, some local government executive council members, ward executive council members and elders that have been on this journey with us.
“Our resolution following intensive and extensive deliberations and consultations with associates and colleagues of Nasarawan Mu Amana Mu, a political movement of the Zenith Labour Party and following our individual resignation of our membership of the Zenith Labour Party, we have resolved individually and collectively resolved to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). This resolution is dated Sunday 6, April, 2025.” Umar declared
