The Benue State Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Denis Iyaghigba, has described Nigeria’s re-election into Category C of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council for the 2026–2027 biennium as “a historic breakthrough and a product of hard work, strategic diplomacy, and sustained advocacy.”

In a statement issued to newsmen on Monday, the Commissioner expressed profound delight over the development, noting that Nigeria’s successful return to the IMO Council after 14 years marks “a clear affirmation that the country has reclaimed its rightful place on the global maritime map.”

According to him, the victory represents renewed international confidence in Nigeria’s maritime governance, technical competence, and global engagement capacity.

He commended the Minister for Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, for leading what he termed “an intensive, expertly coordinated, and year-long campaign involving strategic engagements, sustained advocacy, and purposeful shuttle diplomacy across maritime blocs.”

Iyaghigba stated that the Minister’s persistence and strategic outreach have delivered “one of the most significant victories for Nigeria’s maritime sector in recent history,” adding that the accomplishment further reflects the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to reposition Nigeria as a competitive global maritime force.

He emphasised that President Tinubu’s administration has consistently advanced policies centred on economic diversification, international cooperation, and maritime sector competitiveness. He expressed confidence that the ripple effect of Nigeria’s renewed global standing will be felt across the federation, including in Benue State.

The Commissioner noted that under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, Benue State is “working tirelessly to establish an indelible footprint in the marine and blue economy space.” He explained that the Governor’s initiatives align fully with the national vision, adding that Benue is determined to become “a model for subnational participation in the blue economy.”

Iyaghigba further highlighted that Nigeria’s reinstatement into the IMO Council will unlock opportunities for enhanced investment, improved maritime safety, strengthened environmental standards, and wider economic prospects for states and communities nationwide.
