Confusion in South Africa as Nigerian doctor dies in suspicious circumstances

President Cyril Ramaphosa

By our correspondent

The Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa-led government to launch an investigation into the death of a Nigerian physician, Dr Francis Idika, in South Africa

NICASA urged the South African government to investigate Idika’s death, which according to them, involved bullying, victimisation, wrongful disciplinary charges and sustained abuse.

Idika, who practiced medicine as a medical manager at Vryheld Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, died at 54 on Sunday, March 30, 2025.

The NICASA President, Frank Onyekwelu, in a statement seen by our correspondent on Saturday, said Idika’s death was smeared with suspicion.

He alleged that Idika was ejected from his apartment and mostly slept in his car, which led to depression.

Onyekwelu described the deceased as a dedicated health professional committed to the well-being of his patients.

“His death is a huge devastating loss, not only to his family and healthcare colleagues but to the entire Nigerian Community.”

“NICASA calls on the Nigerian government, all lovers of human rights, the South African Ministry of Health, and the government of South Africa to investigate and bring to justice all that has a hand in Dr Idika`s tragic death. An injustice to one is an injustice to all,” he added. (Sunday PUNCH: Text, Excluding Headline)
