Former Director General of National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr Mike Omeri has called on leaders president Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC administration to use Nation”s Democracy Day to advance economic reforms, uphold the rule of law, and protect the freedoms that support the protection of the citizenry.

Dr Mike in a statement commemorating Democracy Day, acknowledged the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic journey and highlighted the essential link between democratic governance and economic transformation that could translate to the benefits of Nigerians.

“Democracy is not only about political participation; it is also about economic inclusion, transparency, good governance and accountability, all of which are vital to creating a thriving and generating businesses for the people.

According to the former NOA DG who decried how the nation political settings were de tolerating to one party system, added that the progress made since Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999 during PDP, was fast declining thereby exposing the citizens to hardship, hunger, insecurity as a result of continued need for institutional reforms that can build investor confidence, enhance the ease of doing business, and support equitable growth.

He reaffirmed ACCI’s role as a strategic bridge between the government and the private sector, offering policy guidance and advocacy to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic and economic landscape.

“ He urge the government to maintain focus on policies that can promote and create opportunities for youth and women-led ventures. Democracy must translate into meaningful economic empowerment for all,” Omeri stated.

He further noted that the celebration of Democracy Day should inspire reflection and concrete action. He urged policymakers to deepen efforts in improving access to finance, simplifying regulatory frameworks, and ensuring policy consistency; all of which are crucial for promoting economic freedom.

The PDP chieftain, noted that despite quadrennial elections since 1999 gains, made during the reigns of the opposition party, PDP, the country has yet to translate its ballot exercises into “real progress that lifts citizens out of destitution, enshrines their rights and choices, and sparks hope.

He argued that instead, public institutions have “fumbled on stewardship of collective resources and left basic services in tatters, consequently widening the trust gap between government and the governed

“Social and economic poverty has become pervasive, the surge of youth-led protests across the country in recent times, especially against bad governance, reflects just how much, Nigerians are teetering on the brink of survival.”

Dr Omeri while extending his warmest greetings to citizens across the country, stressed the need for unity, inclusion, and continued dedication to democratic values.

“Today, we celebrate not only our right to choose our leaders but also the courage and unity that define us as a people, Democracy is about service, justice, and opportunity for all.”

He urged Nigerians to use the day as a moment for reflection and recommitment to building a more just and prosperous nation, stressing further the importance of peace, tolerance, and patriotism, while reaffirming his personal commitment to national development and social welfare.

“Let us uphold the values of peace and patriotism in all our actions. I remain deeply committed to good governance and to the well-being of all Nigerians.”
