Digital rights, risks protection: Accountability Lab Nigeria launches a radio programme to address unawares in 5 states, FTC

Concerned with the high degree of unawares amongst Nigerians, Accountability Lab Nigeria has launched a radio programme to address unawares in 5 states, FTC

The radio Programme is designed to support Citizens to defend their Digital Rights Across Northern Nigeria

According to the accountanility Nigeria, Nigerians have suffered right violations due largely to the high degree of unawareness in the area of digital proction, rights asn the risk involved.

“Government agencies and regulators need to step up; people want to see digital rights violations actively monitored and offenders punished.” – Nasarawa call-in listener

“Across Abuja, Benue, Kano, Kaduna, Plateau, and Nasarawa states, many citizens were previously unaware of their digital rights and how to protect their personal data online. Limited understanding of data privacy, risky online behaviours such as using unsecured public Wi-Fi, and a general sense of helplessness in the face of digital exploitation were common.

Recognizing this gap, Accountability Lab Nigeria launched a radio programme to raise awareness on digital rights and data protection. The radio program created a space for victims to share their stories of violations and engage in conversations about data privacy and digital rights.

“Through engaging episodes and relatable stories of listeners whose rights have been violated, the programme began sparking behaviour change. Listeners started taking practical steps such as adjusting their privacy settings, safeguarding login details, and avoiding unsafe digital practices”, ALN declarsd. .
One listener shared how the programme supported him to question a healthcare provider about their data protection practices, a step he previously didn’t know he could take.

“Another listener from Nasarawa raised concerns about 9mobile’s failure to communicate data service issues, identifying it as a violation of consumer rights. This reflects a growing shift in public consciousness about digital rights and data protection.

“More importantly, citizens who would have otherwise stayed silent are now reporting digital rights violations through the Ripoti platform, actively seeking redress and justice. This growing culture of informed civic engagement marks a significant step forward in protecting digital rights in Nigeria.
