The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has closed down 25 facilities across four states of Anambra, Enugu, Bayelsa, and Rivers states for non-compliance with environmental regulations.
The clampdown was announced on Friday in Abuja by Mrs. Nwamaka Ejiofor, NESREA’s Assistant Director (Press), in an official statement.
According to the agency, the affected facilities cutting across various sectors were sealed for offenses ranging from failure to conduct Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and Environmental Audits, to lack of functional effluent treatment plants, among other breaches.
Some of the companies affected include: Rugal Pharmaceutical, Emene Industrial Layout, Enugu, China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), Owo Yard, Enugu, Hardis and Dromedas, Umunya, Anambra State and Pinnatech Engi Asphalt Plant, Awkuzu, Anambra State.
Others are: China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), Obogoro Road, Swali, Yenagoa, Bayelsa, Megastar Technical and Construction Company Limited, Imiringi Road, Yenagoa, Bayelsa and Multi Plan Nigeria Ltd., Okuru-Ama, Trans-Amadi Industrial Layout, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
NESREA’s Director-General, Prof. Innocent Barikor, urged facility operators nationwide to adhere strictly to environmental laws, warning that enforcement actions would continue across the country.
“The agency will not relent in its mandate to safeguard the environment through enforcement and compliance monitoring. These actions also serve as a strong deterrent to others operating in violation of environmental regulations,” Barikor said
He emphasized that NESREA remains committed to ensuring that environmental sustainability is not compromised in pursuit of industrial or infrastructural development
