Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has ordered a full-scale investigation into allegations that some local government workers in the state are being paid their salaries in percentages.
The governor gave the directive at Government House, Lafia, shortly after receiving the report of the 2024 local government elections conducted by the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC).
Governor Sule directed the Commissioner for Local Government, Community Development, and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Aminu Muazu Maifata, to carry out a holistic probe into a video claim, trending on social media where the allegations were made.
He stressed that his administration has consistently paid 100 per cent salaries, promotions, and minimum wage to local government workers since May 29, 2019.
While ordering sanctions against any official found guilty of shortchanging workers, the governor also warned that legal action would be taken against the originator of the viral video if the claims turned out to be false. “If it is true, I want you to correct it and bring to book those responsible. But if it is false, steps must be taken against the originator because we can not continue to entertain baseless accusations,” Sule said.
Earlier, Chairman of NASIEC, Barrister Ayuba Wandai Usman, had presented the report of the November 2, 2024 council elections to the governor.
He said the exercise produced 13 chairmen and 147 councilors across the state, stressing that it was peaceful and transparent, with political actors who had grievances resorting to the courts.
He noted that the report provides recommendations for improving grassroots democracy and commended the state government, security agencies, political parties, and civil society groups for their support in ensuring a smooth election.
