IG Mike Okiro remains National, International security reforms ICON – Youth Organization

A coalition of youth organizations have described the former Inspector General of Police, Sir Mike Mbama Okiroas an Icon of the Nations Security reforms whose contributions has remaine the most Outstanding reform.

Speaking at the Excellence Award bestored on the former IG, the Youth said the award was in recognition of his distinguished career and outstanding contributions to national security and institutional reform during his tenure.

Presenting the award during a courtesy visit to him in his Maitama residence by the representatives of Like Minds Support for Good Governance in Africa and the Yaga Foundation, the agroups commended Sir Okiro’s pivotal role in shaping modern policing in Nigeria and affirmed that his legacy remains an enduring benchmark for excellence in public service.

According to Amb. Gabriel Ashibi, National Coordinator of the Yaga Foundation, several Okiro’s landmark achievements include far-reaching reforms within the Nigeria Police Force, modernization of infrastructure, improved officer welfare and remuneration, as well as enhanced logistical and operational capabilities.

“Sir Okiro’s tenure saw the implementation of critical security technologies such as CCTV surveillance in banks, bulletproof vans, and security doors—all aimed at combating bank robberies.

” IG Okiro also championed gender inclusion by establishing the first female mobile police units and expanded the mobile force presence across the country, Ashibi stated

On his part, the Country Director of Like Minds Support for Good Governance in Africa, Mr Rowland Odey recalled that Sir Okiro’s leadership role in the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme that gave birth to the de-radicalization of militants and the restoration of peace to the once-restive region was unprecedented.

“He was instrumental in the sponsorship of the Anti-Terrorism Bill in the National Assembly and the establishment of specialized anti-terrorism units across the country,” the Director added. “Under his leadership, Nigeria’s collaboration with INTERPOL reached new heights, marked by consistent engagement and impactful contributions on both regional and global stages.”

Widely referred to as “The Lion That Guides the City,” Sir Mike Okiro expressed his gratitude to the organizers, describing the award as a humbling reminder of the importance of service to the nation.

“This honor is not just a recognition of past achievements—it is a renewed call to duty,” he said. “I urge every Nigerian to be their brother’s keeper and to live in peace and unity, irrespective of our differences. Nigeria is richly blessed, and only through unity can we unlock its full potential.”
