Inter-agency rivalries: Nigerian Customs apologizes, to probe scuffles with VIO offcers

In what appears to be a continuation of inter-agency rivalries between security operatives in Nigeria which has reportedly resulted in their working at cross-purposes, took a dramatic turn last Friday at the popular AYA roundabout in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, in a five minutes viral video where officers of the Nigerian Customs Service,(NCS) and the Vehicle Inspection Officers(VIO) were seen to be engaged in some form of disagreement that turn physical at the office of the VIO.

Reacting to the incident the Nigerian Customs Service said it acknowledged the video and has regretted that it officers could be engaged in such an unprofessional conduct with their fellow men on uniform.

In a Statement made available to Timbuctu News Tuesday, by the Public Relations officer of NCS, Chief Superintendent of Customs Abdulahi Maiwada, unbehalf of the Comptroller General(CGC) titled Re : Viral Video of Customs officers in confrontation with Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO), the service said it is deeply concerned and empathetic towards those affected by the regrettable incident.

The NCS however dissociated itself from the actions of it officers involved, while condemning their behaviour, stating that they solely acted on their own as the service had since lunch thorough investigation awaiting appropriate disciplinary measures to be taken to forestall future occurrences.

Adding that the incident is in contradiction of the values and operational standards of the NCS, and such behaviour undermines one of the key policy thrusts of the Comptroller-General of Customs, which is to foster collaboration with sister security agencies and other stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians and their property.

According to the Statement, the Nigerian Customs Service under the leadership of CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and his Management Team, strongly condemned such conduct and does not tolerate any actions that jeopardise the commitment to professionalism and inter-agency cooperation, as the service remains steadfast in its mission to generate revenue, facilitate trade, and suppress smuggling to support a more robust and secure economy for all Nigerians.
