In a delightful decision designed to shap Nigeria’s democratic future, the National Council of State has approved the appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented Amupitan’s nomination during the Council’s meeting on Thursday, following the completion of tenure by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who led the commission from 2015 to October 2025.
A statement by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, confirmed that the Council unanimously endorsed the nomination, describing Professor Amupitan as “a man of integrity and impeccable character.”
President Tinubu emphasized that Amupitan, from Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu LGA of Kogi State, is the first nominee from Nigeria’s North-Central region for the top electoral position. He also highlighted the nominee’s apolitical stance and deep expertise in law, corporate governance, and public service.
In line with constitutional provisions, the President will forward Amupitan’s name to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
Born on April 25, 1967, Professor Amupitan currently serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos and as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Osun State.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) since 2014, he is widely respected for his scholarship in Company Law, Corporate Governance, Evidence Law, and Privatisation Law. Over the years, he has held key administrative positions including Dean, Faculty of Law, and Chairman, Committee of Deans and Directors at UNIJOS.
Beyond academia, Professor Amupitan contributes to national development through his service on boards such as the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Council of Legal Education, and Integrated Dairies Limited, Vom.
A prolific author, his works include Corporate Governance: Models and Principles (2008), Evidence Law: Theory and Practice in Nigeria (2013), and Principles of Company Law (2013).
