The Kano State Road and Traffic Agency (KAROTA) has sacked one of its officers, Road Traffic Assistant (RTA II) Jamilu Gambo, over alleged unprofessional conduct.
This is contained in a statement issued to newsmen by the agency’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Nabilusi Abubakar, on Thursday in Kano.
According to the statement, the dismissal followed Gambo’s conduct at his duty post where he allegedly destroyed a trailer’s tires as a result of argument between him and the trailer’s driver.
“This development led to the closing down of Kano-Hadejia Road by other trailer drivers in solidarity with their affected member, which caused untold hardship to commuters and other drivers playing that route,” it said.
The statement added that the dismissal followed after an emergency meeting with the State Commissioner of Police, where it was unanimously agreed that the affected officer be relieved of his duty.
According to the statement, KAROTA Managing Director, Alhaji Baffa Dan’agundi, commended the National Association of Road Transport Owners(NARTO) Kano Branch, for their quick intervention during the incidence.
“NARTO rescued the staff member from mob action which would have resulted to his death,” it said.
Dan’agundi was also said to have commended the police for their role and assured that anyone found wanting at his duty post not be spared.
He, therefore, apologised to the general public for delay of movement as a result of the incident.
The statement added that the agency had handed over the sacked officer to the police for further investigation and ordered him to pay for the damage caused to the driver’s vehicle.
