Maku Honoured as UJ Ambassador

Former Minister Labaran Maku

Former Minister Labaran Maku is to be honoured as one of the Global Ambassadors of the University of Jos, UJ.

Maku, a 1987 graduate of the university, is to be invested with the recognition at the 35th and 36th Convocation Ceremonies of the university.

Labaran Maku, a distinguished alumnus of the institution, is being recognized for his outstanding contributions to nation building, exemplary leadership, and the pride he has brought to the University since his days as a student in addition to the various roles he played as commissioner for information and Deputy Governor in Nasarawa state as well as Federal Minister of information and later covering Minister of Defence of the Federal Republic of Nigeria during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

A consistent voice, Maku had joined forces with other Nigerians to fight for democracy, a move from which the June 12 struggle benefitted, that eventually berthed the current democracy in the country.

The award ceremony will take place on December 12, 2025, at the Eliel Event Centre, Jos, a day preceding the Convocation Ceremonies.

Recall that during his student days at the University, Maku was elected its student union president during which he joined forces to kobilise aga8nst perceived injustices melted by the the military governments against the Nigerian people and the quest for freedom and enthronement of democracy in the country.
