Nasarawa State Owned Tertiary Institutions to embark on strike – Issues ultimatum

Academic and non-academic staff of higher education institutions in Nasarawa State under the aegis of Joint Unions of Nasarawa State Tertiary Institutions (JUNSTI) have issued a 7-day ultimatum to the Nasarawa State Government to implement its 30,000 minimum wage, consequential adjustment and promotions in order to avert industrial disharmony or face an industrial action.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of JUNTSI, Comrade Samson Gbande, and made available to TMnews in Lafia dated 11th November, 2024 indicated that the affected institutions are yet to enjoy the “largesse” of the state government, necessitating the activation of the ultimatum.

The demands of the unions, which are not limited to the N30,000 minimum wage, that was implemented for mainstream civil servants include consequential adjustment and promotions in July 2024, with one month arrears cleared.

These institutions include the Isa Mustapha Agwai I Polytechnic Lafia, the College of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Lafia, and the College of Education, Akwanga.

However, the Governor of Nasarawa State Eng. Abdullahi Sule had on Monday approved the constitution of a committee to engage with organised Labour Representatives in other to ensure a successful implementation of the National Minimum Wage Act 2024 which mandates the payment of 70,000 to civil servants. The committee is headed by his deputy, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe.
