The Ovia Osese Festival is a celebrated week-long cultural event held annually in the historically ancient city (700 years) of Ogori, typically two weeks after Easter. Deeply rooted in culture and rich tradition, the festival is designed to initiate young girls, usually aged 15 and above into womanhood. These maidens, known as Ivias, undergo a culturally significant rite of passage that marks their transition into womanhood. The 2026 edition of the festival is scheduled to take place from April 12 to April 18, 2026, with the theme ‘’Living the Legacy: A Rich Celebration of Tradition and Identity”
At its core, the festival promotes moral values, particularly emphasizing chastity, discipline, and proper upbringing. While it has traditionally required initiates to be virgins, there is a growing shift toward a broader focus on character development and personal integrity. This evolution reflects a balance between preserving cultural identity and adapting to contemporary values.
The Ovia Osese Festival is also a vibrant showcase of the rich cultural heritage of the Ogori people. It features traditional music, dance, performances, as well as a colorful procession where the Ivias are beautifully adorned and accompanied by community elders and women. These displays not only celebrate the initiates but also highlight the unity and pride of the community, prepared to preserve it’s history, it’s story to generations and for all.
Beyond the initiation rites, the festival serves as a unifying event, drawing together indigenes from within Nigeria and across the diaspora, as well as other Nigerians periodically. These Nigerians, found worthy, are initiated into the community and, based on their character and goodwill, are rewarded with traditional titles and recognitions. Some of these include the erstwhile Director General of the NOA, Dr. Mike Omeri who was made the Ogben-weda of the land. Others include: Former Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello as Ogbuloko 1 of Ogori land, Justice Hon. M.E Anenih as Iya Oboro, Hon. Barr. Festus Fuanter as Akpe Weda,. Dr. Mrs. Amina Omeri as Ogben Wiya. Similarly, the festival provides a unique opportunity for cultural expression, revival and sustenance through traditional attire, food exhibitions, and other heritage-based activities. In doing so, it reinforces a shared identity and strengthens communal bonds, unity and friendship.
As preparations intensify, towards April 12, 2026, the people of Ogori are fully mobilized, with all hands on deck to ensure that this year’s Ovia Osese Festival is both memorable and impactful, continuing its legacy as a cornerstone of cultural preservation and community celebration and progress.
You will do well to visit, savour and be part of history at this year’s Ovia Osese in Ogoriland, Kogi State.
