Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described the late political icon of Tiv land, Wantaregh Paul Iorpuu Unôngo as a great nationalist, crusader of unity and a political stabilizer whose immense contribution to the unity and political development of Nigeria would be forever remembered.
Chief Obasanjo’ who was on a condolence visit to Tor Tiv, Begha u Tiv Orcivirigh Prof James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse in Gboko to commensurate with him, the government and people of Benue state, said Unôngo did his best for his community, Benue, Nigeria and Africa through his positive activism for the promotion of justice and fairness stressing that his death is rather a celebration of life and fulfilment.
Chief Obasanjo who recalled the struggles of Paul Unongo to unite the nation, his rolemap as minister of steel and power note that the death of Wantaregh Unôngo was a big blow to not only Benue, but to the entire nation as his wise counsel would be greatly missed. He encourage, the Royal majesty, the government and people of Benue state of take solace on the fact the Unongo lived a worthy life while on earth.
Responding, the Tor Tiv, Orcivirigh Ayatse commended the former president for always demonstrating his passionate love for Tiv nation by especially downplaying his tight schedules to commiserate with him in the traditional headquarters of Tiv people.
“You have done everything for the Tiv nation. When we mourn, you mourn with us, when we laugh you laugh with us. You have even married wives for my sons working with you and have established a big farm in my kingdom”, the Tor Tiv stated.
The Paramount Ruler prayed to God to continue to preserve Chief Obasanjo to express his great love for humanity especially Nigeria and Africa at large.
