This revolution inspired a Nigerian digi-preneur, Debo Shopade, to set up a payment technology solution known as PayedIn. PayedIn was birthed to eliminate barriers to digital payment inclusion for everyday merchants, self-employed individuals, schools, businesses, and not-for-profit organisations such as charities, NGOs, and churches according to its mission statement.

The CEO of PayedIn, Mr Debo Shopade, told TMS Tech News in an exclusive interview that PayedIn was initiated to change the payment space across Africa and ensure digital inclusion.

“When you look at global statistics, look at things around financial inclusion, when you look at things like digital inclusion, when you look at the ambitions of the World Bank, the IMF, the federal government of Nigeria and that of a lot of developing economies, one of the key ingredients for achieving digital inclusion and digital participation in the digital economy is through electronic payments.

“When you look at the number of transacting activities and individuals versus the percentage of those that are actually participating in electronic transactions today, you’ll see that the vast majority are not, I like to say, the bottom 80% have been completely excluded. So one of the things we look at is, what we can do to change that scenario through solutions that address the electronic payment challenges and requirements of the vast majority as opposed to the top 20% that are enjoying it today across Africa?” Shopade said.

Speaking further on the advantages of payedIn over other competitors in the industry, Shopade said PayedIn is easy to use, does not require complicated hardware, and appeals to a broader user base.

“PayedIn is a mobile first product, payedIn does not require systems integration. PayedIn does not require complicated hardware, with PayedIn you can get set up within five minutes and you’re on the go receiving your first electronic payments. So we think that we’re quite unique in regards, and we appeal to broader base of merchants, schools, hotels, and hospitals that want to transition from offline payments to online payments with ease without having to instal big tech.
