Nigeria’s political landscape is characterized by intense competition and a survival-of-the-fittest mentality, which is concerning given the dearth of ideological leadership. Instead of visionary leaders, we often find self-serving individuals who prioritize personal interests over national development. This is particularly disheartening as they exploit poverty as a tool to manipulate the masses, who in turn resist those with a clear vision and effective leadership.
Furthermore, the dangers of a potential one-party state loom large, threatening to stifle dissenting voices and undermine democratic institutions. Moreover, the planned political coalition among key opposition actors lacks direction, raising concerns about its potential effectiveness. Without a unified vision, clear ideology, and strong leadership, this coalition risks being another iteration of the same politics that have failed Nigeria.
Moreover, the inability to inclusively engage the youth will likely derail the plans of this political coalition. As someone who has been involved as a political analyst and has played a role in the formation of several political parties and coalitions since 1999, I can attest that the youth’s energy and perspectives are crucial to any successful political movement. Without their active participation and buy-in, any plans for meaningful change will be severely handicapped.
As the late literary icon, Chinua Achebe, aptly put it, “Things Fall Apart.” Nigeria yearns for transformative leadership that can address the nation’s multifaceted challenges. The country requires a comprehensive reset across all sectors, akin to a baby deprived of essential nurturing. It’s imperative that we seek leaders who can provide direction, stability, and progress, while also ensuring that democratic principles and institutions are strengthened, not eroded.
I remain,
Comrade Ernest Ugorji
