Senator Ned Nwoko has reaffirmed Africa’s demand for reparations at the global level, insisting that a formal apology must precede restitution and that reparations should be treated as an obligation of justice rather than charity.

The lawmaker made the case at the United Nations Summit on Reparations and Repatriation, where he argued that centuries of historical injustice arising from the transatlantic slave trade and colonial exploitation require acknowledgment, restitution and restorative action.

Nwoko’s intervention, is said to have helped redirect Africa’s reparations discourse from moral persuasion to concrete agenda-setting within the multilateral system.

In a related address at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Ghana’s former President John Dramani Mahama, who serves as African Union Champion for Reparations, described slavery and colonial exploitation as among the gravest crimes against humanity.

Mahama urged the international community to place reparations, equitable global systems and restored African agency at the centre of global governance, declaring that “the future is African.”

Analysts note that the alignment between Nigeria’s legislative push, championed by Senator Nwoko, and Ghana’s diplomatic initiative under Mahama has created momentum for a coordinated Pan-African front on reparative justice at the United Nations and the African Union.

They argue that a united approach could compel formal acknowledgment from former colonial powers, strengthen Africa’s bargaining position, and advance outcomes that extend beyond financial compensation to institutional reform, economic inclusion and the restoration of human dignity.

Supporters say the emerging coalition signals a decisive moment for Africa to redefine its global narrative, seeking justice not as supplicants, but as equal stakeholders shaping a fairer international order.
