Journalists all over the country have been advised to uphold the ethics and values of Journalism, as no democracy can grow in absence of journalism practice by any society.
Omeri said said the peace and unity of the society would continued to be threatened if journalism practice is compromised on the basis of brown envelop or appreciation.
Omeri said the independence of the media should continue to be the veritable measure towards the sustenabilty of democracy and development can thrive all over the world.
The former NOA DG who gave the challenge while speaking with journalists at a media thanksgiving service hosted by ERCC Gloryland Lafia, Sunday, tasked media practitioners to understand the precepts of democracy for free, fair and professional practices.
He advised the political class to see the media as “a partner in progress”, insisting that the infiltration of junk journalism has given room to the intimidation and harassment of media professionals in Nigeria and globally.
Also Speaking , Nasarawa State House of Assembly Speaker, Dr. Danladi Jatau affirmed that the media, since the beginning of the Fourth Republic, has helped in the sustenance of Nigeria’s 25 years of unbroken democracy.
On their part, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Abdullahi Sule, Ibrahim Addra and the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comr. Salihu Mohammed Alkali represented by Juliana Ofokwu lauded the media’s unrelenting commitment to professionalism for good governance to thrive, vowing to support developmental initiatives for the betterment of the state.
In a sermon, Dr. Nawani Aboki, Chairman/Chief Executive of Breeze FM Lafia, charged the congregation to support the media in delivering better services to the people, noting that only with the collaboration of the society the media would be successful in its responsibilities.
He warned against unethical practices by the professionals, maintaining that there should be accuracy, truth and professionalism to win the confidence of the society.
On his part, Associate Reverend of the church, Rev. John Godiya encouraged partnership, calling on journalists not to use the media to create tension but for the promotion of social cohesion for progress.
