The Minister of Women Affairs, Iman Sulaiman Ibrahim has called for stiffer including death penalty against perpetrators of Gender- Based Violence (GBV).

Speaking at the 2024 commemoration of 16 days of activism in Lafia, the minister said all hands must be on deck amongst Nigerians to tackle cases of rape and other forms of violence against women.

“We must consider life imprisonment and even death penalty for the most egregious offenses if the fight against the scourge must succeed,” the minister stated

According to the minister, it is only through decisive action that the society can be safe where women and girls can be free from violence.

“Let’s create a future where every woman and girl can live free from violence and discrimination,” she stated.

She also called for collaborative responsibility from the relevant stakeholders across all sectors to accelerate progress towards ending violence against women and girls.

Earlier, Nasarawa state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Aishatu Rufa’i Ibrahim, observed that GBV is a violation of human rights and it has no place in the society.

“This is a call to action for all of us to stand together against GBV and to support survivors and advocates working to end the scourge,”

She commended the Minister of Women Affairs,
and threw her weight behind the minister’s call for punitive action, even death by hanging, for anyone found to have committed rape, stressing that gender-based violence calls for robust stakeholders’ collaboration to defeat the scourge.
