World Environment Day: Elim CVTC urges Makurdi Residents to Unite Against Plastic pollution

A Non Governmental Organization (NGO) in Ega Ibilla, Oju Local Government Area LGA of Benue state, Elim Christian Vocational Training Center (Elim CVTC) has sensitized the Benue public against dumping of refuse indiscriminately urging them to end plastic pollution.

The Executive Director Elim CVTC, Emmanuel Egbodo, made this call on Thursday June 5, 2025 during a rally to commemorate the World Environment Day in Makurdi, the Benue state capital.

Mr Egbodo, who solicited collective efforts to address the challenges posed by plastic pollution on the environment, said it’s important to have all hands on deck in striving to build a more resilient and sustainable future for generations to come.

He said the World Environment Day 2025 theme “Ending Plastic Pollution,” with the hashtag #BeatPlasticPollution, highlights the pervasive impact of plastic waste and calls for urgent action to reduce and eliminate it.

He said the campaign aims to inspire individuals, governments, industries, and communities to reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink plastic use.

In her remarks, the Project Coordinator Elim CVTC, Rachael Achimba said they were going out to sensitize the public to know that plastics should not be littered but that it can be recycled and reused.

She said the choice of High Level Market and High Level garage was unique because the place has a market and a park and they generate a lot of waste especially plastic. “We want them to know that these waste should not just be littered but properly dispose recycled to avoid pollution and safeguard the environment,” she said.

The Deputy Director Climate Change Directorate at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Comrade Paul Idyu disclosed that he Benue state government in collaboration with the federal government has established a waste recycling plant at Abinsi, Makurd LGA.

He said the facility would revolutionize waste management and improve public health among others benefits. Idyu advocated for behavioural change urging the people to shun indiscriminate dumping of refuse the the good of all residents.

The rally saw Elim and its CSOs Coordination Platform members and stakeholders drawn from state MDAs, INGOs, NGOs walking from IBB Square, Makurdi to High-level Market and its environ, sensitizing the public on the need to end plastic pollution of the environment.

ELIM CVTC is a Christian non-governmental organization dedicated to disaster risk reduction and preparedness response, improving the lives of vulnerable populations especially persons with disabilities and building community resilience to disasters.

The NGO is implementing the Enabling Resilience to Climate Change Related Risks project (ER2CC) funded by the European Union and Christian Blind Mission (CBM) aimed at building the resilience of communities to climate related risks and hazards.
