A former Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), declaring his full commitment and loyalty to his new political platform as he signalled a fresh phase in his political journey.
Maku made this known on Tuesday while briefing newsmen alongside SDP officials in his residence at Wakama in the Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of the state.
According to him, his decision to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) was driven by a desire to make meaningful contributions toward the growth and progress of the party at both the state and national levels.
“I joined the SDP to add value and contribute to its success. By God’s grace, I will work to strengthen the party,” Maku declared.
The former minister, who highlighted his track record in job creation, empowerment programmes and infrastructure development during his tenure as Commissioner, Deputy Governor and Minister, assured party leaders of his commitment to securing victory for the SDP before, during and after the 2027 general elections.
He further stated, “Today, I have officially aligned myself with the Social Democratic Party. I chose the SDP in honour of the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and late Senator Godiya Akwashiki, whom I consider one of the finest representatives Nasarawa North and the state have ever produced.
“Senator Akwashiki executed impactful projects across communities in the Nasarawa North Senatorial District. I remain proud of his achievements at the National Assembly.”
Maku noted that the party already enjoys support across the 13 local government areas of the state, expressing confidence that his entry would further strengthen its base. He also expressed optimism that many SDP candidates would emerge victorious in upcoming elections.
Responding to calls from constituents in Akwanga, Nasarawa-Eggon and Wamba to contest the vacant Nasarawa North senatorial seat following Akwashiki’s death, he said he would be willing to serve if given the opportunity once the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) approves the by-election.
He also urged residents of the state to remain united and peaceful in the interest of development.
In his remarks, the SDP Zonal Chairman for Nasarawa North, Mohammed Audu, welcomed Maku into the party and assured him of equal rights and opportunities, alongside other members.
Meanwhile, in a resignation letter addressed to the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Wakama Electoral Ward, Nasarawa-Eggon LGA, Maku expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunity to serve in various capacities.
The letter, obtained on Tuesday, stated that his decision to leave the PDP was prompted by the prolonged internal crisis within the party, as well as growing calls from his supporters to pursue a new political direction.
He added that the decision followed extensive consultations with family members, political allies, community leaders and supporters.
Maku, however, expressed gratitude to the PDP for its support over the years, pledging to uphold shared values and continue working in the interest of the people.
