Borno floods: UNIMAID National Alumni Association expresses shock, commiserates with victims

The National Caretaker Committee of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID)Alumni Association has expressed profound sorrow and solidarity with the residents of Maiduguri and Borno State in general having been severely impacted by the recent devastating floods as a result of the overflow of the spillway of Alau Dam.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee, Dr Mohammed Bulama and issued in Abuja on Thursday, the Association said that the heart felt prayers, and thoughts of members of the Association within and outside Nigeria are with the residents of Maiduguri the State capital and Borno State, particularly those affected by the tragic incidence.

He noted that the catastrophic flooding has caused significant damage, destroying homes, displacing countless families and disrupting the livelihood and businesses of many in Maiduguri and surrounding communities, adding that the association also extend their condolences to the Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai, several bereaved and affected families as well as the people and residents of Borno State, particularly those who have suffered untold losses and hardship as a result of the grim incidence.

The National Chairman who is also Director General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), affirmed the solidarity of the Alumni Association with the people of Borno State and assured that the Association is committed to supporting relief efforts in any way possible in order to help the recovery and rebuilding of affected communities.

He however encouraged fellow alumni, friends, and partners to join hands in extending aid and support to those in need. “our collective strength and resilience will be crucial in the coming days to overcome the present challenge having been inspired by the courage and solidarity among victims who remain hopeful for a swift and effective response to the disaster”

According to the UNIMAID alumni president, the association is appreciative of the efforts of the Government, organizations and individuals so far, while calling for intensified relief efforts, soliciting that fellow alumni of the University of Maiduguri, friends, and partners should join hands in extending aid and support including medical supplies to those in need.
