Dauda Lawal: A Steadfast Defender of PDP Unity

Gov Dauda Lawal

Governor Dauda Lawal Dare of Zamfara State has once again demonstrated his unflinching loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his deep commitment to its revival as a formidable national force. At a time when dissenting voices have emerged over the endorsement of former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as the consensus candidate for the office of PDP National Chairman, Governor Lawal’s intervention has been calm, firm, and reassuring.

The Northern PDP stakeholders recently adopted Turaki as their consensus choice during a meeting in Abuja ahead of the forthcoming national convention, scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State. However, some minute North-West party leaders expressed dissatisfaction, claiming they were not adequately consulted.

Governor Lawal, while inaugurating the Accreditation Subcommittee for the National Convention of the party, addressed the controversy with maturity and political depth. He maintained that the adoption of a consensus candidate is consistent with the provisions of the PDP Constitution and that disagreements of this nature are normal in a vibrant democratic setting. His position reflects not only political wisdom but also his determination to uphold unity and discipline within the party.

A loyal party man, Lawal’s record of commitment has never been in doubt. While others succumbed to political expediency and defected to the ruling party, he remained steadfast, ensuring that the PDP retained a strong presence in Zamfara and the North-West. As Deputy Chairman of the Zoning Committee that upheld the existing zoning formula, and now as Chairman of the Accreditation Subcommittee of the National Convention of the party, his leadership credentials continue to shine.

Governor Lawal has been consistent in defending the PDP against external attacks and internal cynicism. On an earlier occasion, he reminded the ruling APC that defections are no measure of political strength, citing that even with 29 governors behind him, former President Goodluck Jonathan still lost the 2015 election. His recent remarks affirm that the decision of PDP governors to support Turaki’s candidature does not violate the party’s constitution.

He also dismissed insinuations by Capt. Umar Bature, the National Organizing Secretary, said that the protest meeting held by some dissenting North-West leaders was convened at his instance. As the most senior PDP figure in the zone, Lawal’s endorsement effectively cements the consensus choice and brings clarity to the path ahead of the Ibadan convention.

Governor Lawal’s combination of intellect, political tact, and loyalty underscores why he remains one of the party’s most respected voices. His defense of the consensus arrangement has helped stabilize the party’s internal dynamics and redirect attention toward rebuilding its national outlook.

As the PDP prepares for its convention, the optimism within party ranks is palpable. Many believe that under the guidance of disciplined leaders like Dauda Lawal Dare and their continued support to the PDP, the party is on the verge of reclaiming its strength and moral authority. The excitement is growing that the PDP will soon bounce back to challenge the arrogance and impunity of the ruling APC, which many Nigerians now associate with poverty, division, and economic hardship.

Governor Lawal’s steadfastness stands as a rallying point for party loyalists nationwide. His words and actions reaffirm a simple truth that with unity, conviction, and purposeful leadership, the PDP can once again restore hope to a nation yearning for responsible governance
