A High Court in Lafia has sentenced a 27-year-old man, Ahmadu Yaro, to 21 years in prison without option of fine for raping a three-month-old baby in Adogi village, Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
Delivering judgment on the matter in Lafia, the presiding Chief Judge of Nasarawa State, Hon. Justice Aisha Bashir-Aliyu, described the act as “barbaric, demonic, and a direct attack on the moral conscience of society.
Justice Aisha Bashir-Aliyu said the sentence whi would serve as justice for the victim and a warning to others.
It would be recalled that the incident, which occurred in 2020, had sparked up nationwide outrage culminating in a conviction after five years of legal proceedings. Yaro will serve the jail term without the option of fine.
Nasarawa State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Isaac Danladi, personally led the legal team in court—a move that drew widespread commendation.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Barr. Mohammed Nda Yako, who witnessed the proceedings, described Danladi’s appearance as “true leadership and an unwavering dedication to justice.”
Speaking to reporters, Barr. Danladi welcomed the ruling, saying, “This is a strong message that Nasarawa has zero tolerance for sexual violence. Justice has been served.”
He added that the government under Governor Abdullahi Sule remains committed to supporting survivors and prosecuting offenders of gender-based violence.
It was gathered that Ahmadu Yaro will serve his sentence in a Nasarawa State correctional facility.
