RE: CLAIMING VICTORY OF 2023 GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION SHOWS OMBUGADU, PDP YET TO RECOVER FROM SHOCK OF DEFEAT

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nasarawa State notes with concern the press release issued by Hon. Peter Ahemba, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abdullahi A. Sule, which is laced with baseless accusations, unnecessary personal attacks, and an obvious attempt to distract from the failures of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration in the state.

For the avoidance of doubt, our party and its candidate in the 2023 governorship election, Hon. David Ombugadu, remain resolute in our commitment to upholding democratic principles, defending the will of the people, and pursuing justice within the framework of the law. We wish to address the falsehoods and misrepresentations contained in the said press release.

1. Misleading Claims of “Landslide Victory”

The APC’s so-called “landslide victory” is a narrative that fails to align with the realities on the ground. The PDP has consistently maintained that the 2023 governorship election was marred by irregularities, voter suppression, and other anti-democratic practices. These issues formed the basis of our appeal at the election tribunal, a constitutional process which demonstrates our respect for the rule of law.

Rather than dismissing our claims as “shameful” or “misleading,” the APC should be prepared to defend the legitimacy of their mandate in the people they governed rather than resorting to attacks and propaganda.

2. Wedding Ceremony Turned Campaign Rally?

The claim that Hon. David Ombugadu used a wedding ceremony in Nakuse, Toto Local Government Area, for political purposes is another desperate attempt to divert attention. Weddings, funerals, and other communal events are integral to the fabric of our society and provide an opportunity for leaders to interact with their people. It is not unusual for such occasions to feature discussions about governance, the well-being of citizens, and future aspirations.

If the APC finds it inappropriate for leaders to engage their communities in such settings, perhaps they should focus on the governance gaps that compel citizens to raise concerns whenever they encounter their leaders.

3. Desperation and Breach of Electoral Laws

The accusation of “desperation” and a supposed breach of electoral laws is not only laughable but also hypocritical. The APC, more than any other party, is known for premature politicking and undermining electoral processes. It is on record that the APC in Nasarawa State has begun its subtle campaigns for 2027 by erecting billboards and organizing events clearly designed to influence public opinion.

If the APC is genuinely concerned about adherence to the law, we challenge them to hold themselves to the same standards they seek to impose on others.

4. Governance Performance

The APC government in Nasarawa State has failed to meet the expectations of the people. While the press release touts “massive development across all sectors,” the reality paints a different picture. Nasarawa continues to face challenges in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and security. The much-publicized Nasarawa Economic Development Strategy (NEDS) has yet to translate into tangible benefits for the average citizen.

Instead of fixating on Hon. David Ombugadu and the PDP, we urge the APC to focus on fulfilling their campaign promises, addressing the real needs of the people, and justifying their claim to governance.

5. Unity and Progress

As a responsible party, the PDP remains committed to the unity and progress of Nasarawa State. Our criticisms of the APC government are not born out of bitterness or desperation but stem from a genuine desire to see the state fulfill its potential.

We call on Governor Abdullahi Sule and his administration to rise above petty politics and engage in constructive governance. The people of Nasarawa deserve better than press releases filled with divisive rhetoric and unfounded accusations.

Finally, we assure the good people of Nasarawa State that the PDP will continue to stand with them, advocate for their interests, and pursue every legitimate avenue to ensure their voices are heard and their votes respected.
