Sen. Ned Nwoko to Chair Senate committee on oil theft

The Senate at its plenary on Tuesday appointed Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, as the chairman of its adhoc committee on crude oil theft.

Announcing the appointment, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the creation of the ad hoc committee was a direct outcome of a motion sponsored by Senator Nwoko on July 25, 2023, titled “Need to Investigate the Incessant and Nefarious Acts of Crude Oil Thefts in the Niger Delta and the Actors.” Following the motion, the Senate resolved to take decisive action to tackle the menace of crude oil theft by setting up the committee with a clear mandate, including: Investigating the involvement of security forces, militia groups, local communities, and oil company employees in crude oil theft.

Similarly, the Senate has commenced legislative action on a bill seeking to ban the movement of articulated lorries, tankers, and trailers during daytime hours nationwide.

The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Federal Road Safety Commission (Establishment) Act, 2007, to Restrict the Daytime Movement of Heavy-Duty Vehicles and for Related Matters,” was sponsored by Senator Ned Munir Nwoko of Delta North senatorial district, and successfully scaled its first reading on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.

The bill if passed into law, will introduce a nationwide ban on the movement of articulated lorries, tankers, and trailers between 6:00 am and 12:00 midnight, restricting their operations to the hours of 12 midnight to 6:00 am, except in emergencies.
