2027: Let’s Try a Christian Governor — Prof. Onje Gye-Wado Slams Years of Muslim Leadership in Nasarawa

Nasarawa State Government

Former Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State and renowned Professor of Law at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Onje Gye-Wado, has stirred political discourse ahead of the 2027 general elections, calling for the emergence of a Christian governor in the state.

Speaking during a political symposium held in Keffi, Prof. Gye-Wado expressed dissatisfaction with what he described as decades of Muslim-dominated leadership in Nasarawa State, dating back to 1996. According to him, the state has little to show in terms of tangible progress despite the long-running Muslim leadership.

“Muslims have been ruling Nasarawa State since 1996 and there is nothing to show for it. Let us try a Christian governor,” he stated firmly, triggering both applause and murmurs within the audience.

Gye-Wado, who served as Deputy Governor between 1999 and 2003, lamented what he called the persistent marginalization of Christians in the state’s highest office, despite their significant population and contributions to Nasarawa’s development.

The professor argued that inclusive leadership and power rotation are essential to unity, equity, and sustainable progress. He urged political parties and stakeholders to consider a Christian candidate for the 2027 governorship race as a symbol of fairness and fresh direction.

The comment has since sparked mixed reactions across Nasarawa’s political and religious landscapes, with some praising the call for inclusiveness, while others cautioned against identity-based politics.

Political observers believe Gye-Wado’s statement may influence the zoning debate within major political parties as the state heads into another election cycle.

As 2027 draws nearer, the push for a Christian governor may become a defining issue in Nasarawa’s political narrative.
