2027: Nasarawa South Cannot Afford to Get This Choice Wrong — Why Dr. Mike Omeri Is the Senator the District Needs

There are elections that are about political parties, and there are elections that are about the future of a people. The 2027 Senatorial election in Nasarawa South should be about the latter. At a time when the district requires stronger representation, greater national influence, purposeful legislation and a senator who understands both the grassroots and the corridors of power, the choice before the people is clear: Dr. Mike Omeri represents the kind of leadership Nasarawa South urgently needs.

Dr. Omeri is not entering public life as a political novice searching for relevance. He is a distinguished statesman whose years of service have given him invaluable national experience. As a former Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), he operated at the national level and interacted with institutions, leaders and communities across Nigeria. That experience matters because effective senatorial representation requires more than occupying an office; it requires the knowledge, confidence and connections to engage national institutions and bring the interests of Nasarawa South to the attention of those who matter.

But beyond the titles and positions he has held, Dr. Mike Omeri is fundamentally a community man. His traditional title, Obowu Kha Kyana, reflects the respect and recognition he commands within his community. He understands the people, their aspirations and their challenges. He understands that leadership begins with listening and that a representative must remain connected to the people after the campaign posters have disappeared and the election has been won.

Another outstanding quality Dr. Omeri brings to the table is his exceptional capacity for mobilisation. His national exposure has given him the ability to build bridges across communities, political interests and institutions. Nasarawa South needs a senator who can mobilise people and resources for development, who can engage constructively with the Federal Government, ministries, departments and agencies, and who can transform relationships in Abuja into tangible opportunities for the people back home.

This is why experience matters. The Senate is not a place for political experimentation. It is where laws affecting millions of Nigerians are made, where national policies are shaped and where constituency interests must be vigorously defended. Nasarawa South deserves a representative who understands governance, public administration and national policy. Dr. Omeri’s background gives him an advantage that should not be dismissed in the name of political sentiment.

Equally important is his reputation as a compassionate humanitarian. At the heart of leadership should be the ability to feel the pain of others and respond to it. The people of Nasarawa South need a representative who will care about the unemployed youth, the struggling farmer, the vulnerable woman, the student seeking opportunity, the elderly and families battling economic hardship. Leadership should not be measured only by speeches in Abuja but by the positive difference it makes in the lives of ordinary people.

Dr. Omeri’s vision also speaks to the need for unity and inclusive development. Nasarawa South is a district of diverse communities and interests. What it needs is a bridge-builder—not a divider; a unifier—not a leader who thrives on conflict. A senator should be able to bring people together, irrespective of political, ethnic, religious or geographical differences, and create a common agenda for development. Omeri’s broad experience and community orientation position him to play that role.

The challenges confronting Nasarawa South are too serious to be reduced to election-time promises. Insecurity, poor infrastructure, unemployment, inadequate healthcare, educational challenges, agricultural development and the need for greater economic opportunities require intelligent and sustained representation. The district needs a senator who can think beyond the next election and work toward a future in which young people have opportunities, communities attract development and the voice of the people carries weight at the national level.

The real question, therefore, is not simply “Who should win the election?” The bigger question is: “Who can best represent Nasarawa South?” Who has the experience? Who has the national contacts? Who understands the grassroots? Who can mobilise? Who can build bridges? Who has demonstrated compassion for humanity? Who can walk into the national arena with the stature and confidence required to defend the interests of the people?

On these critical questions, Dr. Mike Omeri deserves serious consideration. He represents the convergence of experience, community leadership, national exposure, mobilisation, compassion and service. Nasarawa South has an opportunity in 2027 to choose a senator who can connect the people at home with the institutions and opportunities available at the national level.

Nasarawa South cannot afford to get this choice wrong.

The district cannot afford another opportunity to pass by while political considerations take precedence over competence and capacity. This is a moment to look beyond party colours and temporary political calculations and ask what kind of representation will serve the people for the next four years and beyond.

The time has come to choose experience over experimentation, capacity over empty promises, compassion over indifference, unity over division, and service over self-interest.

The time has come for Dr. Mike Omeri.
