In the tapestry of life, certain individuals leave an indelible mark, their legacies woven with threads of brilliance, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. One such individual was the late Tanimu Barau Ogbole , affectionately known as ‘Man Timsy.’
My journey with this extraordinary man began in 1980 at Bayero University Kano (BUK), a journey that would profoundly shape my understanding of leadership, friendship, generosity, and intellectual prowess.
A Meeting of Minds
In 1980, as I embarked on my academic journey with a Pre-Degree Programme at the School of General Studies (SGS) in BUK, Tanimu Barau Ogbole was in his final year, pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communications (MASSCOM). Despite the difference in our academic standings, age, and social exposure, Tanimu’s presence was immediately felt. He was not just a senior student; he was a beacon of inspiration, a figure whose intellectual acumen and charismatic presence were impossible to ignore.
Academic Excellence and Intellectual Brilliance
Tanimu’s academic journey was marked by exceptional achievements. Graduating with an honours degree at the enviable level of 2/1 in 1980, he set a benchmark for excellence within the Faculty of Arts, Department of MASSCOM, BUK His academic prowess was not confined to the classroom; it extended to every facet of his life. Tanimu’s intellectual brilliance was evident in his eloquent speech deliveries, his methodical approach to problem-solving as a team leader, and active Alago Student Unionist, in addition to his ability to engage in deep, meaningful discussions.
The Quintessential Orator
One of Tanimu’s most remarkable qualities was his command over not only Alago language but also the English language. He was, without a doubt, the best speaker of English I have ever encountered. His speeches were not just grammatically impeccable; they were masterpieces of rhetoric. Tanimu had an uncanny ability to weave words into a tapestry of coherence and elegance, making every argument he presented not just convincing but mesmerizing and sexy, I beg the pardon of the men of God for my choice and use of ‘S’ word. His voice, with its unique blend of clarity and melodious charisma, had a magnetic quality that drew listeners in and held their attention.
A Brother and a Mentor
For me, Tanimu was more than just a brilliant person; he was a big brother and a mentor. I loved to perch around him running his errands, especially during intellectual discussions. His presence was a source of comfort and inspiration. Whenever he took the floor, his voice transformed, not just in sound but in substance. It was as if an erudite Englishman had taken over, delivering arguments with precisions and finesse that were faultless. Tanimu’s systematic and methodical presentation of his arguments was Wow!!!
The late Tanimu left an indelible mark on my life during our time together at Bayero University Kano (BUK).
When he departed BUK for his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and later pursued a Master’s degree at Leicester University, United Kingdom (UK), I was still at an infantile stage in my academic journey. His absence left a void, but his accomplishments and the examples he set continued to inspire me.
‘Man Timsy,’ as he was fondly known, ventured into various walks of life, making significant contributions wherever he went. One notable stint was his role as a Public Relations Officer at Jos Steel Rolling Mill. Tragically, his promising career and life were cut short when he joined the ill-fated aeroplane that crashed at Kaduna Airport.
The crash not only took Tanimu’s life but also involved his best friend, a Christian of Mughavul extraction, Mangle (fondly called Manga by Tanimu) who survived the crash only to be brutally murdered while serving with the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS). This double tragedy is a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the profound loss felt by those who knew and loved Tanimu.
Tanimu, who, as early as 1980, had already earned a professional qualification in Mass Communications (MASSCOM), remains unparalleled in his field. His intellectual prowess, combined with his dedication and character, sets a standard that few can match. To this day, I stand by my conviction that his brilliance and contributions are unmatched, and I welcome any undisputed truth that could harpoon this belief.
Tanimu Barau Ogbole later lectured at the University of Maiduguri, where he excelled both as a teacher and mentor to many. I was told his class was always filled to the brim. He was attentive to the needs of his students and would generally find out about them any day that they failed to show up in class.
The memory of Tanimu evokes deep emotions, and as I reflect on our time together, I am often moved to tears. He was more than a mentor; he was an icon whose influence shaped my academic and personal development. His legacy is a testament to the heights of excellence one can achieve with dedication and integrity.
In these moments of reflection, I pray for long life, good health, and the love of all, save for the devils within us. May we strive to uphold the values that Tanimu cherished.
May Allah grant Tanimu an abode at the highest level of Paradise, Aljannah Firdaus. Amin.
