The opening ceremony for the Tokyo Olympic games begins amid strict Covid-19 protocols, as fewer than 1,000 spectators are allowed into the Olympic stadium, Tokyo for the ceremony.
As the Emperor of Japan, Emperor Naruhito is set to formally open the event, a moment of silence is held for the victims of the pandemic.
The ceremony also remembers Israeli Olympians killed in 1972.
While the athletes’ parade is now taking place, the identity of the athlete to light the cauldron remains undisclosed.
