Gov Alia appeals to FG for more personnel as death toll in new Benue attacks rises to 56

Not fewer than 56 dead bodies have so far been recovered in Ugondo, Logo and Tyuluv, Gbagir, Ukum Local Government Areas of Benue state following the coordinated attacks on communities by suspected herdsmen.

Recall that gunmen suspected to be herdsmen militia invaded the two local governments on Friday, April 18, 2025, killing and maiming villagers who ran for their dear lives

As at Saturday when the Governor Hyacinth Alia visited for an on-the spot assessment on the area, 56 corpses had been recovered from the affected communities while villagers had deserted with armed police personnel seen patrolling in the areas.

Our correspondent reports that those who fled the areas are now taking refuge in Zaki-Biam and Ugba IDP camps.

Addressing the people at Ugba IDP camp, the Governor called on the Federal Government to assist his administration with the necessary support to end the senseless killings and displacement of innocent citizens in the state.

Governor Alia who sympathized with the families that lost their loved ones as a result of the attacks, promised to take care of their burial and medical bills of those in the hospital.

Member representing, Logo, Ukum and Katsina-Ala, Solomon Wombo lamented the security situation in the area and appealed to the Federal Government establish a military barrack in the area to protect his continents from armed herdsmen and bandits.

 Chairman, Logo Local Government Council, Mr Clement Kav and Mue Ter Ugondo, Chief Peter Iorhuna thanked the Governor for the swift response in coming to identify with them over the attacks.

The Governor was accompanied on the visit by the heads of security agencies in the state, including the commissioner of Police, DSS, NSCDC, Operation Whirl Stroke, Home Land Security, Civil Protection Guards among others.
