The Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting Karl Kumm University, Vom, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance academic excellence and build human capacity for national development.

Governor Mutfwang made the pledge while receiving a delegation from the university’s Governing Council, led by the Acting Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Prof. Hayward Mafuyai, during a courtesy visit to Government House, Jos.

The governor in a statement by the Director of press and public Affairs, Dr Gyang Here, Described Karl Kumm University as a vital institution in the quest for national transformation, the Governor acknowledged its strategic role in developing human capital. He assured the delegation of his administration’s continued support, not only through official channels but also through active advocacy at every opportunity.

“Karl Kumm University is not new to me,” Governor Mutfwang remarked. “I had the privilege of serving on its endowment fund committee during the tenure of former Governor Jonah Jang. Alongside distinguished individuals such as Prof. Gang and under the chairmanship of Retired Air Marshal Weir, we held the first fundraising drive even before the university formally took off.”

He further noted, “While Plateau State University falls under my direct purview, I feel a moral obligation to support all institutions that contribute to the education and development of our youth. Karl Kumm University is a key partner in this mission, and we will not relent in championing your cause.”

Governor Mutfwang expressed satisfaction with the steady progress recorded by the institution and commended its missionary foundation, driven by the vision of Rev. Karl Kumm. He lauded the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) for turning that vision into a vibrant academic institution. Emphasizing the centrality of education to his administration’s development blueprint, he pledged to work with the Council to address the university’s infrastructural deficits.

“A self-sustaining church must invest in wealth creation through knowledge,” the Governor emphasized. “Karl Kumm University is not just an institution of learning, it is a legacy project with the potential to redefine the future of our nation.”

He added: “The value this university brings through its graduates is a direct gain to Plateau State and to Nigeria at large. We will stand by you to ensure Karl Kumm University continues to grow and excel.”

The Governor also commended the university for resolving past disputes with its host community and expressed his intention to personally visit the institution in the near future.

He highlighted the importance of naming the university after Rev. Karl Kumm, founder of the Sudan United Mission (SUM), noting that many prominent Christian and educational institutions in Northern Nigeria trace their origins to his vision and sacrifices.

Earlier in his remarks, Prof. Hayward Mafuyai briefed the Governor on the university’s achievements and challenges, noting that the Karl Kumm University, established by COCIN, began full academic activities in 2023.

Despite this promising progress, Prof. Mafuyai outlined key infrastructural needs, particularly in electricity supply and laboratory upgrades as crucial to securing full accreditation and fostering a more conducive learning environment.

“Addressing these gaps will not only raise academic standards but significantly enhance the university’s impact on national development,” he stated.
