There was frenzy in the main campus of the University of Maiduguri this morning as students ran helter skelter after hearing gun shots from nearby Kaleri community not far from Mairi Kuwait.
Most of the students especially the ladies were said to have run out of their hostels when they heard the gun shots knowing the volatility of the campus before the federal government started building a fence around the main campus.
The insurgents were said to have come out from the nearby savannah forest just behind the University of Maiduguri campus area at about 12. 20 am in the early hours of today.
“They moved into the Mairi ward in jere council area shooting sporadically into the air forcing many of the residents to run away from their houses to avoid being hit by stray bullets.” Said our source.
So the pandemonium actually was ignited by scared students who lived in the campus who did not want to become victims of cross fire between the marauding terrorists and nearby troops of Operation Hadin kai who had responded to the attack promptly without back ups from nearby sub bases.
The source who spoke to this reporter on anonymity noted that this is the third time in about a month that the Boko Haram insurgents will be raiding this same loop hole of greater Maiduguri kidnapping residents and stealing food stuffs from vandalised shops and houses to take to their harems.
He said that the raid of yesterday was a targeted one aimed at specific areas including sub military bases which is why they succeeded in carting away an AK47 rifle of a mobile policeman who locked his at the military check point and went on a strolling spree.
” There is however, no confirmation about casualty figures, if any or even people said to have been abducted within the last month except that a ten year old boy was killed in the cross fire during the last month.” Said our source.
Meanwhile, as the month of ramadan draws to an end, the collaborative intelligence network in the state have dropped a hint indicating that Boko Haram insurgents who had settled in the lake Chad communities around Damasak in Borno State are now on the run.
This is because most of the insurgents have been displaced as a result of Air strikes by the Hadin Kai forces and ground troops combing of the general area were these terrorists had most of their camps destroyed completely.
So in the process of running away some of them have infiltrated into nearby cities, and towns while many are believed to be carrying dangerous explosives and rifles that can harm residents.
“Residents of Maiduguri and environs are urged to remain vigilant, especially during Qiyamul Layl prayers, and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities immediately”, noted the Intel to residents.
The sporadic gun exchange between the soldiers and boko haram have since subsided with students seen in the main campus going about their activities while some were seen breaking their fasts peacefully.
