Two former governors and a serving governor are at the verge of defecting from the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to other political parties.
“Discrete investigations reveal that, before end of next month, July, the two former governors and the serving governor would announce their defection, followed by mass defections from the two major parties,” according to an exclusive report late Wednesday by The SUPREME newspaper.
“Our investigations further reveal that, four serving governors held a clandestine meeting yesterday in Ikoyi Lagos. The outcome of their meeting was described as ‘top agenda’ by a source close to the meeting,” the paper said.
It claimed that “majority of those that will defect from APC to PDP are from the northern part of the country, including those from the Middle Belt.
“Similarly, those set to defect from PDP to APC and to Labour Party (LP) as well as to Social Democratic Party (SDP) are from the South-South, South-East and from the South-West.”
The paper said that it reliably gathered that “negotiations between political heavyweights and their teeming supporters in various states began last weekend in Abuja, Lagos and in Port Harcourt”, quoting “a dependable source close to one of the meetings” as hinting that “from next week (this week) Monday there shall be mass defection.”
The report coincided with an alarm by a former Minister of Aviation and chieftain of the APC, Femi Fani-Kayode, that 22 APC senators are planning to defect to PDP.
The ostensibly looming exodus has sparked panic in APC, prompting the party’s National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, to meet APC federal lawmakers behind closed doors on Wednesday at the National Assembly. How far his intervention can go in preventing the mass defection remains to be seen.
