New York, USA – Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering women and addressing societal exclusive practices. Represented by Commissioner for Women Affairs Caroline Darfur, the governor spoke at a side event of the 70th Conference on the Status of Women (CSW70) held recently in New York city.
Governor Mutfwang emphasized that empowerment begins with education and announced plans to support communities to encourage learning. He also highlighted the risks posed to women and girls by artisanal mining practices in Plateau communities.
Speakers at the event themed “Transforming Systems, Centering Women: A Social Justice Agenda for Equality and Accountability”
stressed the need for more women in authority to shape policies and advocated for comprehensive reforms in multiple sectors. Dr. Andrew Mamedu, Country Representative of Action Aid Nigeria, noted that power and resources go hand in hand, while Professor Joyce Ezeilo of WACOL emphasized the importance of transforming systems and strengthening women with a social justice agenda.
The First Lady of Plateau State, Barrister Helen Mutfwang, spoke passionately about equality being a key determinant of social progress and sustainable development.
Dr. Amina Omeri, presenting her research report, recommended that governments treat school retention as a social justice and economic strategy, formalize informal economies, and embed women in decision-making processes through mandated representation.
“Governments should treat school retention as both a social justice and economic strategy requiring result-driven household support systems and enforceable preventive policies to be in place while formalising informal economics for safety and dignity,” Dr. Omeri said.
The event was attended by partners such as Action Aid International, Global Affairs Canada, and over 45 delegates from other countries. The side event was hosted by the 100 Women Lobby Group whose President Dr. Felicia Onigbon gave the opening during which she commended the plateau state governor for support amd urged other governors in Nigeria to copy his exemplary interests and initiatives.
