IS TRUTH NEGOTIABLE?

Introduction

Every society stands on two pillars: Truth and Justice. When either one bends, the whole structure begins to shake.

Today we hear phrases like “my truth,” “the whole truth”, “alternative facts,” and “let’s meet halfway on the facts.” This raises one serious question: Is truth negotiable?

To answer that, we must first understand what truth and justice really mean.

Defining Key Terms

1. Truth
Truth is the conformity of a statement, action, or reality to fact and actuality. It is that which corresponds to reality, regardless of opinion, feelings, or majority vote.

Truth is not created by us. It is discovered.
Example: 2+2=4 is true whether you agree or not. A person died is true whether the press reports it or not.

Philosophically, truth is objective, universal and unchanging. It does not depend on who is speaking it.

2. Justice
Justice is the fair and impartial treatment of people according to law, right, and moral truth. It means giving to each person what is due to them.

Justice without truth becomes manipulation. Truth without justice becomes cruelty.

Justice answers the question: _“Given what is true, what is the right thing to do?”_

Now, Is Truth Negotiable?

1: No, Truth is Not Negotiable
Truth by nature cannot be negotiated because negotiation implies compromise. You cannot compromise reality.

If a bridge has a structural defect, we cannot “negotiate” and say it is 50% safe. It will still collapse.

If an election was rigged, people cannot negotiate and say it was “half free and fair.” The result is either true or false.

When truth is treated as negotiable, powerful people begin to define reality for the weak. That is how propaganda, injustice, and oppression are born. In governance, in courts, in families — once truth is for sale, or negotiable, trust dies.

2: The Way We _Approach_ Truth Can Be Tactful
While truth itself is not negotiable, how people communicate truth must be guided by wisdom and love. Galatians 6:1 says _”restore gently.”_

In politics and community life, people may negotiate _policy, timing, and methods_ based on truth, but the people must never negotiate the truth itself.

Example: The truth is that Eggon people deserve to live. That is not negotiable. But how they pursue that life — through dialogue, coalition, or protest — can be discussed.

The Danger of “Negotiated Truth”

When truth becomes negotiable, justice dies. Because justice must be built on facts.

If we negotiate that “this man stole a little, so let’s call it a donation,” we have killed justice.

If we negotiate that “our son is guilty, but let us protect him,” we have killed both truth and justice.

This is why nations collapse: not because they lack laws, but because they negotiated away the truth that should uphold those laws. Someone seeing the situation, learns from it tomorrow. If justice was served, precaution follows, otherwise, another goes into the same commission.

The Relationship Between Truth and Justice

Truth is the foundation. Justice is the building.

You cannot have real justice without truth. A court that ignores evidence cannot deliver justice. The court cannot rely on emotions and deliver judgement.

You cannot have lasting peace without justice. A society that knows the truth but refuses to act on it will boil over and over until justice is put in place, one truth.

That is why Proverbs 12:19 states: _”Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.”_

Conclusion

So, is truth negotiable? My answer is No.

Truth is like the sun. You can draw curtains, you can wear sunglasses, you can argue about it — but it is still there.

What _is_ negotiable are our opinions, our interests, our strategies, our emotions and our egos including pride. What is _not_ negotiable is existence and reality.

For Nations in the world, for Nigeria particularly, and for humanity: if we want justice, we must first agree to stand on truth. Not my truth, not your truth, but _the_ truth, the whole truth.

Because a people that negotiates truth will eventually negotiate away its future.
And a people that defends truth, even when it hurts, will always find justice.
