Residents of Kilema ward in Lafia metropolis of Nasarawa State have appealed to Governor Abdullahi Sule to take immediate steps to reconstruct kilema /Tudun Amba Bridge to ease movement of goods and services particularly inflow of food within the areas into the state capital.

They made their feelings known while speaking to TMS news at the scene of a recent flood that Submerged the Kilema/Amba Bridge linking Doma and Lafia, cutting off vehicular and pedestrian movement along that axis due to heavy rainfall which lasted over 9 hours and submerged the Amba bridge. The flooding affected homes, schools, and businesses as residents of the area scampered for safety and abandoned their personal belongings.

Prince Eze John and Rejoice Adam, both teachers of Police Secondary School Lafia, who were crossing to attend the graduation ceremony of the school, said they were stranded with no option than to go back home and that the fate of others, was simular to theirs. While appealing to the government to come to their rescue as a matter of urgency, they explained that this is not the first time the water submerged the bridge both in Kilema and Kofar Kaura, adding that there is need for Governor Sule to take proactive measure to rescue the two bridges from frequent collapse, plunging residence to untold hardship.

A resident of Doma, Adam Alhassan Doma and a driver from Doma, Amadu Attah noted that the bridge needs government’s attention to protect lives and property of people plying the bridge from Lafia to Doma for their day to day activities in the state capital.

“This is the only road linking Lafia and Doma Local Government areas and failure to look for a lasting solution to this will spell doom for all of us plying the road, remember Doma is known for it rich agricultural production thus, cutting off Doma from Lafia and by extension other parts of the State would further worsen the hunger crisis prevailing in the country”

Commenting, Comrade Haruna Abubakar and Bala Simon Alu said the flood has crippled business activities within the affected Areas, calling on relevant authorities to do the needful by constructing Kilema Tudun Amba Bridge for hitch-free movement of people before, during and after the rainy season.

Chairman, Kilema Youth Development Association, Shehu Abbas, said flood affected many houses within the river bank, appealing to relevant authorities to come to their aid.
