Following reports of renewed crisis between the Itsekiris and Urhobos in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, Senator Ede Dafinone representing Delta Central Senatorial District, has appealed for calm and peaceful resolution of the disagreement between them.
Senator Dafinone, in a statement personally signed and released on Tuesday, expressed deep concern over the development and urged all parties to exercise restraint, shun violence, and embrace dialogue.
“At this critical time, I appeal to all parties to exercise restraint and shun any acts of violence. I further call on the Federal Government and relevant security agencies to act swiftly in de-escalating the situation and ensuring the safety of all communities,” he stated.
The lawmaker noted that both the Urhobos and the Itsekiris have coexisted for decades as neighbours with strong cultural, social, and economic ties that should not be destroyed by avoidable conflicts.
He condemned reported attacks on the Urhobo Progressive Union, UPU House at Okere-Urhobo, which also left some youths injured, describing the incident as “deeply regrettable.”
“The UPU represents the heritage and identity of the Urhobo people worldwide. An attack on the UPU is, by extension, an attack on the entire Urhobo Nation. I urge the authorities to investigate these incidents thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” he stressed.
Senator Dafinone further tasked the security agencies to remain neutral, fair, and proactive in maintaining peace, while prioritising dialogue, reconciliation, and trust-building.
He also called on traditional leaders, community elders, youth groups, and political actors to work collectively toward unity, peace, and mutual respect.
The lawmaker urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conclude the Supreme Court-ordered delineation exercise in Warri Federal Constituency, saying it would help resolve long-standing grievances and foster peaceful coexistence.
“Together, we can sustain the bonds of brotherhood and build a future anchored on justice and harmony,” he concluded.
