Religion was never meant to be a cage or prison. It was meant to be a compass for a Godly life.
At its core, religion points inward and upward at the same time: inward, to examine the self; upward, to align with something greater than ego, tribe, and appetite. Its purpose is simple and demanding, to bring a person to the place of constantly doing good. Not occasionally. Not selectively. Not when the cameras are rolling. Constantly. In private as much as in public.
When religion does that, it frees you. It frees you from the tyranny of your own greed, from the need to dominate others, from the addiction to being seen as righteous while living in the dark.
But there is another version that wears the same name and speaks the same language.
That version does not seek to free people. It seeks to own them.
Using religion as a tool to enslave a group of people for selfish reasons is the oldest con in human history.
It happens when leaders turn sacred texts into leashes.
When “fear of God” becomes “fear of me.”
When titles and money become the price for silence.
When verses about submission are preached to the governed, but never to the governor.
When the church, mosque, or shrine becomes a campaign office, and the congregation becomes a voting bank.
That is not religion. That is branding.
That is not devotion. That is control.
A true religion says, “Serve God Almighty.”
A counterfeit religion says, “Serve me.”
The difference is easy to see if you stop listening to the sermon and start reading the scorecard of politicians.
Show me your scorecard of your personal life, and I will tell you if you’re truly a religious person.
Not your prayer hours. Not your fasting days. Not the number of times you say “God said” in a speech.
Show me:
– How you treat people who have nothing to offer you.
– Whether your family sees peace or fear when you walk through the door.
– If your wealth grew because you created value, or you blocked others from it.
– If your power made people braver, or more afraid.
– If your private life matches your public preaching.
A man can lead morning prayers and still be a thief in daylight.
A woman can quote scripture and still build her house on the tears of others.
That is not piety. That is performance.
True religion leaves receipts.
It shows up in honesty when no one is watching.
In justice when it costs you something.
In mercy when you have the power to crush.
In service when I’m no title attached.
Religion that does not make you kinder, more truthful, more responsible, and more useful to others is not religion. It’s costume. And costumes are worn for two reasons: to hide, or to deceive.
So let’s stop measuring religiosity by how loud the shout is, and start measuring it by how steady the life of freeing is.
Because at the end of the day, God is not impressed by your title, your robe, or your platform.
He reads the scorecard you didn’t know anyone else could see: the life you lived when you thought no one was judging you.
Live that life well. Everything else is noise.
