Handshake Movement Alleges Political Interference in Federal High Court Ruling on Opposition Parties

The Handshake Movement has criticized a recent ruling delivered by the Federal High Court in Abuja, alleging that the judgment was part of a coordinated effort to weaken opposition political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement signed by its Lead Advocate, Comrade Ibrahim Garba Wala (IG Wala), the movement alleged that the suit leading to the ruling was politically motivated and designed to target the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other opposition platforms.

The group specifically alleged that members of the National Forum of Former Legislators, who initiated the legal action, were connected to political figures associated with the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President. According to the movement, the lawsuit formed part of a broader attempt to restrict political competition ahead of the next election cycle.

The Handshake Movement also questioned the involvement of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice in the matter, arguing that the move raised concerns about the neutrality of institutions expected to operate independently.

Addressing the legal basis of the court’s decision, the group claimed that the ruling overlooked submissions made by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which it said had affirmed that the ADC met constitutional requirements and that there was no basis for deregistration.

The movement further alleged that the court proceeded with the matter despite the existence of an appellate court order directing a stay of proceedings. It argued that the development raises concerns about adherence to judicial processes and the hierarchy of the courts.

According to the statement, the ruling reflects what the group described as growing political anxiety within the country’s leadership amid concerns over insecurity and economic hardship.

The organization maintained that opposition parties should be allowed to participate freely in the democratic process and warned against actions it believes could undermine political pluralism.

As part of its response, the Handshake Movement disclosed plans to petition the National Judicial Council (NJC) over the conduct of the proceedings. It also urged supporters, political candidates, and mobilizers to remain calm and continue their political activities while legal steps are pursued.

The group expressed confidence that the matter would be challenged through the appellate process and maintained that opposition parties, including the ADC, would remain active participants in the 2027 elections.
