President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Mr. Balarabe Shehu Ilelah, a veteran broadcaster, as the new Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
This was announced by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday.
Lai Mohammed stated in the statement that Mr. Ilelah’s appointment is for a tenure of five years in the first instance.
The appointment is coming amidst a row between the Nigerian Government and Social media giant, Twitter. It will be recalled that the Federal government through the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed suspended Twitter’s operations in Nigeria last week Friday.
The suspension came a day after the platform deleted a tweet from President Buhari’s timeline for violating their rules. The president had made a ‘genocidal’ threat against the Igbos over the rising Insecurity in the region.
