Nasarawa Assembly tackles activities of land grabbers

Nasarawa State House of Assembly, has taken steps to check the activities of land grabbers in order to promote and tackle land crisis in the State.

As the House passed into second reading, A Bill for a Law to Prohibit Forceful Entry and Illegal Occupation of Landed Properties, Violent and Fraudulent Conducts in Relation to Landed Properties in Nasarawa State and Other Matters Connected Thereto.

Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, the Speaker of the House announced the passage of the bill into second reading after the Sponsor of the bill, Hon Ibrahim Aliyu Nana, member representing Keffi West constituency presented the substance of the bill during the House proceedings today in Lafia.

Speaker Jatau commended the Sponsored of the bill and Hon. members for their positive contributions on the bill.

He said that the menace of land grabbers has led to conflicts on lands in the State which has resulted in destruction of properties and even loss of lives.

The Speaker said that a rise in cases of land grabbing is an issue of great concern to the assembly, hence the need for the House to give the bill priority.

He said that the bill, if passed into law would address the activities of land grabbers thereby promoting peace and security in the state.

” I will commit this bill to the House Committee on Land and Survey to work on the bill and report back to the House on 15th October, 2024″ the Speaker said.

Earlier, the sponsor of the bill and member representing Keffi West Constituency, Hon Ibrahim Aliyu Nana while giving the substance of the bill said it was aimed at addressing all issues sounding illegal sales and occupation of landed properties in the State.

He said that the activities of land grabbers are becoming worrisome in the state, particularly in Karu LGA.

“The Rt. Hon. Speaker and My Honourable colleagues, there is the need to end the activities of land grabbers in the state.

” This is to promote peace, security and save resources in the state.

“The issue of land grabbing has been a persistent challenge in various parts of our state, especially Karu LGA, causing unrest and conflicts among others, ” he said.

Hon Nana called on his colleagues to support the bill to pass second reading.

In their contributions, Hon Luka Iliya Zhekaba, Hon Suleiman Azara, Hon Hajarat Danyaro, Hon Ibrahim Abdullahi Sa’ad, Hon Jonah Ali Dizaho, Hon Larry Ven-Bawa, Hon Solomon Yakubu Akwashiki, Hon Musa Ibrahim Abubakar, Hon Mohammed Omadefu, Hon Onarigu Kana and Hon Dr Peter Akwe, all supported the bill to scale second reading.

They all lamented on how activities of land grabbers and speculation have affected the peace of the state negatively.

They also called for drastic action against offenders and stressed as the need for court to avoid unnecessary delay on land cases.

Similarly, the House also passed into second reading a Bill for a Law to Establish Nasarawa State Private Health Institutions Management Agency Charged with the Responsibilities of Regulating Private Health Facilities and Training Institutions, Licensing and Supervision of Health Services in the state and for Other Matters Connected Therewith.

Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, the Speaker of the House announced the passage of the bill into second reading during the House proceedings today in Lafia.

The Speaker said that the bill, if passed would tackle quackery in the private health institution in the state.

He said the bill, if passed and assent to would also strengthen health institution thereby boosting the health status of the people of the state.

The Speaker committed the bill to the House Committee on Health to work on the bill and report back to the House on 16th October, 2024.

Earlier, the Leader of the House Hon. Suleiman Azara while giving the substance of the bill said it was aimed among other things to establish an agency in the state to take charge of activities of all private health establishments was passed into second reading.

He said that the bill, if passed would also improve on the quality of health personnel in the state.

Also contributing, Hon Larry Ven-Bawa, Rt. Hon Abel Bala and Hon Jacob Kudu, supported the bill to scale second reading.

They said that the bill if passed would check mate the activities of private hospitals and clinics in the state.

They said that the bill would also tackle quackery in the private health institutions.

Furthermore, the House has passed into first reading a bill to Make Provision for a Contributory Pension Scheme for Employers in the Public Service of Nasarawa State and for Other Matters Connected Therewith.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau announced this during the House proceedings in Lafia today Tuesday.

Speaker Jatau slated 28th of October, 2024 for second reading of the bill.
