FCTA demolishes 350 structures near Abuja airport over security threat

Two days after the FCT Ministerial Task force Team on City Sanitation marked some criminal colonies for demolition around the Nnamdi Azikwe Internatinal Airport, it on Thursday carried out its threat by demolishing Bassa’n-Jiwa village.

Officials of the FCT Administration’s Taskteam on City Sanitation accompanied by a joint team of security personnel stormed the village in the early hours of the day and cleared about 350 structures.

Speaking during the exercise, Director, Development Control Department, Murkhtar Galadima, said the densely populated Bassa-Jiwa village, situated near the Nnamdi Azikiwe Int’l Airport, in the Abuja Municipal Area Council was a potential security threat to residents and visitors.

He added that the illegal settlement also contravened and defaced the Federal Capital Territory.

Most of the structures demolished were residential buildings, shanties, batchers and kiosks sitting on the right of way under train bridge and pedestrian crossing.
