2025 Int'nal Day of Peace: NSCDC resolves 91 marital cases, 94 other civil cases in Benue

In its converted efforts to maintain a peaceful environment in Benue State, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Benue Command through its Peace and Conflict Resolution (PCR) Unit has resolved 185 civil cases in Benue, including 91 marital/family cases, in one year.

The State Commandant, Mrs Larai Bitrus disclosed this on Tuesday, in Makurdi, during the 2025 International Day of Peace celebration themed “Act Now for a Peaceful World.”

Bitrus disclosed that out of the 228 cases reported to the PCR unit between Oct 2024 and Aug 2025 and, 185 were resolved while only 43 were unresolved.

She commended the PCR unit for their diligence and patience with warring parties during the resolution of the cases which had yielded massive results.

The Commandant stated that the Command has been empowered by the NSCDC amended Act, 2007 in Section 3(6) to arrange and mediate in the settlement of disputes among willing members of the public.

“NSCDC remains a key player in community peace through conflict resolution which is in line with the Corps mandate of maintaining law and order, protection of civilian, critical national assets and infrastructure.

“The PCR’s primary objective is to promote peace, stability, and conflict resolution within our communities and I am happy they are doing their job well,” she said.

Bitrus therefore, urged all stakeholders especially the traditional institutions to renew their commitment to promoting peace, tolerance and understanding.

She said every Benue person must work together to address root causes of conflicts, foster dialogue and build bridges across divides in order to end all unnecessary communal clashes.

Also speaking, the head of PCR unit, Mr Augustine Arumona commended the Commandant for granting them the freedom to operate resulting in resolving civil cases without interferences.

Aromona said the unit has achieved significant success in maintaining and promoting peace within Makurdi and other parts of Benue.

He said they have resolved 91 marital/family cases, three communal conflict incidents, seven land related cases, six farmers/herders conflict incidents.

Other resolved cases according to Arumona were 20 tenancy disagreements, 66 breach of contract/indebtedness, 18 interpersonal, three religion/belief incidents and 14 others.

Arumona urged the general public to always approach the PCR unit of NSCDC to resolve their conflicts instead of resorting to violence, saying there is no alternative to peace.
